翻译“改革宗神学”讲义。第4章。

这一章一共出现7处“in relation to”。虽然我没有给出上下文，但是基本上意思都是清楚的。请熟悉翻译事工的读者，先自行脑补一下如何翻译。这样，当你看到后面我们的翻译和修改的时候，就不至于太小看我们团队的能力和功底了。

  • Immensity refers to God’s infinity in relation to space.
  • God is infinite in relation to space.
  • Eternity refers to “His infinity in relation to time; we mean that He is without beginning or end; that He is free from all succession of time; and that He is the cause of time.”
  • Trying to define time and space in relation to the being of God constitutes one of the great problems in philosophical theology.
  • Relative–The divine essence considered in relation to His creation (Berkhof, 55) or intellect, will, and substance (Th, 2:80).
  • Omnipresence refers to “His infinitude in relation to His creatures” .
  • Justice and righteousness have to do with God as He is in relation to others.

我学习英语的主要方式是阅读科幻小说，一般不查字典。但是我妈妈（一位在重庆外语学校教过几年法语的俄语系教授，说英语的时候带有浓浓的俄罗斯腔调）告诉我，如果一个词出现了7次以上，那么就值得查查字典，把它记下来。

所以，韦伯大词典是这样玩的：

我的简单理解是：
in relation to 是个书面化的成语，有三种含义：1. 与……相比；2从……角度来看待……；3. 关于……

所以，我要具体考察7个句子中in relation to 的用法（括号中是我们的译者最初的译法，后面是我根据字典定义所做的修改和调整）：

1. Immensity refers to God’s infinity in relation to space. （广大性是指上帝相对于空间的无限性。） 修改：广大性是指上帝在空间上的无限性。 2. God is infinite in relation to space ( 在空间上，上帝无穷无尽。 ) Bingo，无需修改。 3. Eternity refers to "His infinity in relation to time; we mean that He is without beginning or end; that He is free from all succession of time; and that He is the cause of time." （永恒指的是“祂的无限与时间的关系；我们的意思是，祂既没有开始也没有结束；祂不受时间的支配；是祂造成了时间的存在。”） 修改：永恒指的是“祂在时间上的无限性；…… 4. Trying to define time and space in relation to the being of God constitutes one of the great problems in philosophical theology. （人试图在定义时间、空间时与上帝的存在产生关联—— 这是哲学神学的一大难题。） 修改：试图从上帝的角度来定义时间和空间，乃是哲学神学上的一大难题。 5. Relative–The divine essence considered in relation to His creation (Berkhof, 55) or intellect, will, and substance (Th, 2:80). （相对属性——与祂的创造（Berkhof, 55）或智力、意志和物质（Th, 2:80）有关的神圣本质。） 修改：相对性——用上帝的受造物及其智力、意志和实质与上帝相比较，以考察神的本质。 6. Omnipresence refers to "His infinitude in relation to His creatures" （全在指的是“祂与祂的创造物之间的无限关系”） 修改：全在指的是“与受造物相比，上帝的无限性”。 7. Justice and righteousness have to do with God as He is in relation to others. （公正（Justice）和公义都与上帝有关，正如上帝与人有关一样。） 修改：就像其他一切都与上帝有关一样，公正和公义也与上帝有关。
这本讲义被我们团队的译者称为“不说人话”的讲义。但是希望通过“跨文翻译”团队的努力，最终它可以说中文。

以下是关于难度的评论：

在CIU中文项目的所有课程中，估计就是这门课最难翻译了。所以，CIU就把这门课外包给我们团队了，而且只采购了翻译服务，没有要校对服务。

我以上所做的校对，基本上就算是义务劳动了。这就是跨文翻译的动机：为中国教会训练优秀的译者。希望下一个项目，译者们水平和速度都有所提高，我在校对和修改、与译者探讨技术问题上的时间就可以相应的减少。

但是说起来，今天的话题已经是高级话题了。我们的译者在大多数译文上已经处理得很好。

接下来，我要募款翻译一本历史书：我的朋友和同学，在广西工作过10年的林亚瑟所写的《广西宣教史》（The History of Christian Missions in Guangxi China）。跨文翻译的使命，除了培养高水平的神学翻译之外，还希望能够翻译介绍当代宣教士在中国活动的文献，比如从前我们翻译的《山友》。
